Crystal Khoo

Hi everyone, I am Crystal,

Since joining Independent Kids at the beginning of 2021 as a counsellor with a strong focus on friendship skills social skills development and social-emotional capacity building, I have taken on another role as an NDIS behaviour support practitioner. As I am so passionate about supporting our young people with building their social cognition and social-emotional learning, I will continue to wear my counsellor hat during half of my time here.

When I am wearing my behaviour support practitioner hat, I will be providing behaviour support under the NDIS Commission. Drawing from my ever expanding clinical knowledge and backed with my qualifications in Psychology, Counselling, Applied Behaviour Analysis, Collaborative-Proactive Solutions and Positive Behaviour Support, I was heavily involved in developing the assessments and tools for providing behaviour supports in line with the NDIS Commission. I will be drawing from my existing (and ever expanding!) clinical knowledge to undertake behaviour support assessments, including functional behavior assessments, to develop behaviour support plans that address the needs of the client and the underlying causes of behaviour of concern, while safeguarding the dignity and improving the quality of life of the client. I am passionate about supporting young people and strongly believe that behaviour is a way of communication and all behaviours serve a function, so there is a clear focus on person-centered and evidence-based interventions, with the aim of reducing and eliminating the use of restrictive practices. An NDIS behaviour support plan will specify a range of person-centered, proactive strategies that focus on the individual needs of a person in order to build on the person’s strength, improve their quality of life,  increase their opportunities to participate in community activities and increase their life skills. This will developed in consultation with the client, their family, careers, guardian and other relevant people, as well as the service providers who will be implementing the plan.

I look forward to working with all of you wearing either my counsellor or behaviour support practitioner hats :)
