Hi, my name is Carla.
My passion for working with children and families resulted in me joining the team at Independent Kids and Adults in 2021 as a Therapy Assistant. I am currently completing my Master in Social Work and have a holistic approach in the way I work. I have strong focus on understanding and working with challenging behaviours for children and young people with disability and trauma backgrounds. This passion has lead me to take on a new role as an NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner. This role enables me to work with and support young people and their families to improve relationships and their quality of life.
As a Behaviour Support Practitioner under the NDIS Commission I draw upon my training and experience in social work, crisis prevention and intervention, trauma informed practice, positive behaviour support, child services, community and disability services and communications. My ever expanding tools and knowledge allow me to provide individual support for every client I work with. I undertake behaviour support assessments, including functional behaviour assessments and develop behaviour support plans that understand and support the needs of the client, as well as behaviours of concern. I work with integrity and believe strongly in upholding and living my values through my work particularly the values of respect and dignity for all persons, relationships, belonging and quality of life.
I recognise the courage it can take to seek support and am passionate about learning, educating and advocating for young people. We know that people are hard wired for connection and I believe that behaviour is a way to communicate and engage with those around us. I take an evidence based and person centred approach to my work, recognising that the client and those closest to them are the experts in their own lives. Through positive behaviour support I work collaboratively to reduce and eliminate the use of restrictive practices and challenging behaviours.
An NDIS Behaviour Support Plan will provide a range of person-centered, proactive strategies based on the person’s environment, relationship, strengths, skills and interests. My aim is to build upon these to improve their quality of life and increase connection with community and peers. Plans I prepare will be developed in consultation with the client, their families and support teams.
